A Solid Foundation

In the first recorded teaching of Jesus that we encounter in the New Testament, the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus ended by telling us a story about two men who built their houses on different types of foundations. One built on solid rock and the other on sand. A fierce storm came and beat against both houses. The house that was built on the sand foundation collapsed. But the house built on solid rock was able to withstand the storm.

After telling this story, Jesus said — “Anyone who listens to my teaching (that includes all of God’s Word, the Bible) and follows it (another way to translate this is “and puts it into practice”) is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.” Matthew 7:24 (NLT) Jesus is encouraging us to build our lives on His Word. And in doing so you’re building your life on a rock solid foundation. He wants us to that so that when the storms, the trials and the difficulties of life hit, you’ll be able to withstand them; you can be like the person who builds a house on solid rock.

I don’t know what is going to happen in the weeks, months or the year ahead, but I can guarantee that you will experience storms in your life; they might be health, emotional, financial or some other kind of storm. We know that storms will come, and if your life is not built on a solid foundation; something that is not going to shift, you’re going to crumble. You cannot build your life on popular opinion or popular culture; those things are going to change and shift. If you want to withstand the storms of life, you must build your life on unchanging truth of God’s Word.

One challenge I cannot overemphasize is to spend time reading God’s Word, the Bible, every day. This month, we will be starting a new series where we will be looking into God’s Word and putting what we read into practice. As we read God’s Word, it increases our faith. As our faith grows, we experience transformation from the inside out, and we become more like Jesus. The more our lives reflect Jesus, the more influence we will have on the world around us. And much of that influence will come as the world sees how we handle the storms of life.

Plan now to join us as we build our lives on that solid foundation of God’s Word and put our faith into practice.

Peace and Blessing,

Pastor Mike
