In the first recorded teaching of Jesus that we encounter in the New Testament, the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus ended by telling us a story about two men who built their houses on different types of foundations. One built on solid rock and the other on sand. A fierce storm came and beat against both houses. The house that was built on the sand foundation collapsed. But the house built on solid rock was able to withstand the storm.
After telling this story, Jesus said — “Anyone who listens to my teaching (that includes all of God’s Word, the Bible) and follows it (another way to translate this is “and puts it into practice”) is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.” Matthew 7:24 (NLT) Jesus is encouraging us to build our lives on His Word. And in doing so you’re building your life on a rock solid foundation. He wants us to that so that when the storms, the trials and the difficulties of life hit, you’ll be able to withstand them; you can be like the person who builds a house on solid rock.
I don’t know what is going to happen in the weeks, months or the year ahead, but I can guarantee that you will experience storms in your life; they might be health, emotional, financial or some other kind of storm. We know that storms will come, and if your life is not built on a solid foundation; something that is not going to shift, you’re going to crumble. You cannot build your life on popular opinion or popular culture; those things are going to change and shift. If you want to withstand the storms of life, you must build your life on unchanging truth of God’s Word.
A couple of weeks ago, I challenged you to begin reading through the New Testament with me. As we read through God’s Word together, I believe that we will learn more about God than we have learned before. We’ll learn more about ourselves and our world than we have ever before. I believe that we will experience transformation from the inside out, and become more like Jesus than we are right now. So will you accept this challenge and read through the New Testament with me and build your life on a solid foundation? I sincerely hope that you will.
Peace and Blessing,
